Brian spent his youth exploring the woods on his family farm in central Texas. If forced to go indoors, he would draw. Art was always a focus. Fortuitously, his sister became neighbors with master wildlife artist Ken Carlson. Ken introduced Brian to fine art and in particular, wildlife art. Studying art and design, Brian graduated from Austin Community College with a degree in commercial art. He remained in Austin, working as a graphic designer for seven years. As technology began to overtake the hand, Brian turned his attention to fine art.

Brian considers his approach to painting honest. Simply put, technology is kept to cataloging reference pictures only. He does not project or design with the aid of a computer. Rough thumbnail sketches are developed. Once the final design and sketch are in place, a grid is drawn to enlarge on gessoed board. A charcoal sketch on the board is refined before a wash of oil paint to develop values. Then the painting begins.

Brian makes frequent reference trips to study animals  Plein air studies further his unique vision that resonates. He believes the human hand can bring forth sensitivity and relatability that are missing in a digital world.

"I can’t bring myself to use a mouse or push a button to create my art when I enjoy the traditional methods so much. I believe something gets lost in translation when you let something get between you and nature."
